Description

Ohio Buckeye (Aesculus glabra) is not surprisingly the state tree of Ohio! It is part of the horse chestnut family. The Ohio buckeye is an understory tree so it has the best looking leaves when planted in part to full shade, but it has great flower and nut production if planted in more sun and irrigated well in the summer. Ohio buckeye trees are one of the first to leaf out in the spring but then turn brown early and often lose their leaves by late summer. The flowers of the Ohio buckeye are large, 12 inch long, upright terminal clusters of yellowish-green flowers. The Ohio buckeye blooms in April to May, depending on the geographical location.
