Description

Red buckeye (Aesculus pavia)  is a native relative of the horse chestnut to the southern parts of the US. It is cultivated in the northern states, but still does well.  This is a small, rounded tree and often forms into a clump. The tree typically drops leaves by the end of summer. Additionally, the leaves tend to scorch in dry conditions, so some afternoon shade for the tree can be really helpful with this! This tree will produce smooth, light brown 1″ diameter nuts in about ten years. The brown-grey bark can be used as a soap substitute!

The 6-8″ red, upright flower clusters of this tree attract both hummingbirds and butterflies in early spring. The red buckeye is highly toxic to humans, dogs, and horses.
