Description

Buffaloberry, Russet (Shepherdia canadensis), also known as soapberry, is a shrub that grows three to eight feet tall, fixes nitrogen in the soil, and is native to the US, Alaska to Maine on south to northern Mexico. Buffaloberry produces small, oval, orangish-red fruits that are soapy when crushed. Blooms appear in May-June, and fruit in July, making it a great host plant for moths and butterflies. Buffaloberries are not self-fertile, so it is important to plant both male and female plants for fruit production. Our plants are not gendered at this time, so we cannot guarantee any specific gender.
