Description

Buttonbush (Cephalanthus occidentalis) is a multi-stem shrub that grows well along riverbanks, lakes, and swamps. It prefers moist soil. It typically grows about 8-12′ high but can reach up to 20′ high in certain situations. Buttonbush flowers June-September with white “pin-cushion” flowers followed by showy brownish fruit that persists into the winter.

The seeds of the buttonbush make great food for ducks and other shorebirds, while the flowers attract butterflies and hummingbirds.
