Description

The Austrian Pine (also known as European black Pine) is often used as a landscape pine because of the beautiful pyramidal shape.  Other common uses are in shelter belts or as softwood timber. Mixed in with spruce and other pine, it is a great windbreak tree that handles many conditions and grows fast. As a native to Europe, it grows in France, Spain, Turkey, Cypress, Ukraine, Morocco, and Algeria. Here in United States, it has naturalized in some areas of the mid-west. It can grow well in harsh climates.

Needles on the Austrian pine are dark grayish green. They grow in bundles of two needles and fan out from the branch. Each needle is 3-51/2″ long and quite sharply pointed at the tip. Cones on the Austrian pine are short and squat, shaped a little like an egg. After maturing they are brown in color.
