Description

Blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum, or highbush blueberry) is a fruiting plant that is native to North America.  Blueberries can grow 6-12′ tall in the right conditions. These shrubs have great fall color and delicious fruit. They grow well in swampy areas and are often found natively in bogs as well as forests of higher elevation.

It is easy to extend the blueberry season through most of the summer by planting consecutively ripening varieties of plants. Of the varieties we have to offer,  Blueray is the first to fruit, followed by Patriot, Duke, Bluecrop, Jersey, and finally Elliot. Planting multiple varieties that flower at a similar time will also increase fruit size, although blueberries do not require it and are self-pollinating. Prune blueberries in late winter, if you desire a certain shape or characteristic.

Blueray- large fruit, slightly tart, compact plant 5′ tall, more drought tolerant

Patriot- upright growth habit, large fruit

Duke- late flower, early fruit. Yellow and orange foliage.

Bluecrop- considered one of the best fruiting varieties. Hardy, drought tolerant, and spreading growth habit. Tons of flavorful light blue berries.

Jersey- old variety. Large sweet berries. Grows upright.

Elliot- late-season fruiting (can fruit through September), upright growth habit, berries are great for freezing.

Ideally, soil will be high in organic matter, moist, and high in acidity.
