Description

Loblolly pine, also known as Yellow Pine or Oldfield Pine. They are a very common tree in the United States. It is a fast growing tree that is native to the southeastern part of the United States. It grows from Delaware down to southern New Jersey and over to central Texas.  Their usual habitat is swampy areas and low-lying ground. They are important nesting trees for osprey, bald eagles, and other raptors. Many bird varieties and squirrels eat the seeds from the Lobolly pine.

Here at the farm we are in a small area of warmth from Lake Michigan that allows us to grow Loblolly pine. Needles on the loblolly are 6-9″ long, yellow green in color and grow in a small bundle. They grow in a pyramidal shape and like many pines, they lose their lower branches when they mature. The trunk on a Loblolly pine grows straight and can be up to three foot in diameter at maturity. Because of the straight trunk, rapid growth and the size of the trunk, it is an important tree for the timber industry. The wood is used for pulp, plywood, furniture and lumber for construction.

Great as a screening tree when planted with other varieties that keep their lower branches.  It is a tree that should be planted well away from structures as it is highly flammable.
